What cardiologists do

  • Diagnose and treat conditions: They diagnose and manage heart-related illnesses, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and abnormal heart rhythms.
     
  • Perform procedures: They may perform procedures like electrocardiograms (ECGs), echocardiograms, and cardiac catheterizations. 
     
  • Provide lifestyle guidance: They advise patients on lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, to prevent heart disease. 
     
  • Manage and prevent risk factors: They work to control risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. 

Types of cardiologists

  1. General Cardiologist: A doctor who oversees the treatment of cardiac illness in adults.
  2. Electrophysiologist: Specializes in heart rhythm disorders.
  3. Interventional Cardiologist: Performs procedures like cardiac catheterization to treat cardiovascular problems.
  4. Pediatric Cardiologist: Focuses on heart conditions in children.
  5. Cardiovascular Surgeon: Performs surgical procedures to correct heart disorders.
